I am obsessed with my iPod play count. iTunes keep track of how many time you listened to each song. After listening to the iPod all day, I synch it with the computer and it changes the play counts on the list of songs. This of course leads to knowing what the top 10 most played songs are at anytime. I love this. It’s unhealthy the pleasure i get from knowing which songs I listen to most.
When I choose a song to listen to, I think about how it will effect that songs ranking. When a random song comes up that I like I think “Oh good, this song deserves a higher ranking.” If I don’t like the song I’ll skip to the next song - because I don’t want it’s ranking to go up. I never listen to the list of the top 25 songs, because I don’t want them to have an unfair advantage. If my iPod runs out of battery it forgets the songs it played since the last synch. My iTunes record will be incomplete. This really upsets me.
Sometimes songs go up in ranking in ways that are out my control. For example ow that we live with a baby, I’m more likely to play the mellow mix, so mellow songs get more play, even though they are only 10% of my collection. My current top three songs are all on this list.
Here’s my current top 10 most listened to songs. Strangely it’s not my list of favorite songs…
- Eden by Hooverphonic
- Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths
- Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club
- Suavamente by Elvis Crespo
- 5 Years by Bjork
- Fight Test by The Flaming Lips
- Western Trail by Bauer
- When You Notice the Stripes by The Shins
- Summerfire by B U
- Stroker Ace by Lovage
In other iPod news I recently downloaded iPod2Go which I heard about from another blogger, James Jackson. It downloads the news and weather to my iPod when I synch. It’s pretty nifty.
OK, I admitted my embarassing top list (hooverphonic is my number one? I’m really that shallow?) So if you’ve got an iPod leave a comment and give your top ten list. If you are too embarassed about all the ABBA on the list, just give yourself a fake name!
